What Is a Master/slave Household?

Most people I talk to have no idea what a Master/slave household actually is. Some think they do, and describe a regular D/s relationship instead, which isn't quite it.

What Actually Makes It a Household

At its simplest, a Master/slave household is a household made up of at least one Master and one slave. What separates it from a regular D/s relationship is structure. Written protocols, rituals, and rules, often kept in a shared handbook, the same reason I write ours down instead of trusting memory. Coats of arms, titles, ranks, ceremonies. It sounds like a lot of ceremony for what's ultimately two or more people living together, but that's the point. The structure outlasts whoever happens to hold a given role at the time, so the household keeps existing even as the people in it change. That's what turns it into a sense of community and lineage, not just a couple with a rulebook.

Rooted in the Old Guard

This leans heavily on what's called the Old Guard of BDSM, structure, titles, and formal protocol passed down deliberately rather than improvised from scratch, the way a lot of pre-internet leather communities organized themselves. It's still very uncommon in Europe. Before I started Domus Cornelii, I'd never come across another European household, it was entirely an American thing as far as I could find.

More Than Just Two People

The bare definition says one Master and one slave, but most households I've read about, and the one I'm building, are bigger than that in practice. Multiple slaves, sometimes multiple Dominants, something closer to an extended family than a couple. That's the whole draw for me, and it's why I've written before about wanting a real, chosen family out of this, not just a single dynamic with extra paperwork.
